Giralda Tower
Audio guide in English
The Giralda is the former minaret of the Great Almohad Mosque of Seville, in Andalusia. After the Reconquista, the mosque was converted into a cathedral, and the Giralda became its bell tower.
The Giralda is one of Seville's most spectacular watchtowers (atalaya) and one of its quintessential symbols. Known throughout the world, its silhouette has inspired countless works of art and even very similar, almost identical, monuments, meaning that anyone, even if they have never been to Seville, will quickly recognize it. It is also one of the most famous Moorish monuments in the world.
The Giralda's bell tower houses a total of 24 bells, including the bell of Santa Maria Maggiore, which is particularly remarkable for its weight of one and a half tons.
The climb to the top is not difficult for visitors. The tower has 35 ramps that were installed so that the sultan could ascend on horseback. These are the same ramps that are still in use today.
