Anthéor Viaduct 1944 Provence landing
Audio guide in English
Destruction of the viaduct is therefore one of the objectives of the Landing of Provence (Operation Anvil Dragoon) because it involves prohibiting any sending of reinforcements from the Alpes-Maritimes to the Landing area.
On the morning of August 15, 1944, from 6.30 am to 8 am, intense naval artillery preparation was added to a massive aerial bombardment. In the final, several thousand rockets are fired on the beach and the surrounding area. The whole thing is described as "terrifying" in the activity report of the Brooklyn, the destroyer of the US NAVY in charge of operations for the beach of Anthéor.
At 6.30 am the viaduct is observed “apparently intact”. At 8:00 am the two eastern pillars are observed destroyed, having dragged the vaults into their fall. The viaduct is totally unusable.
