 A natural heritage to preserve
SINCE THE CLOSURE OF THE QUARRIES IN 1959, NATURE HAS TAKEN BACK POSSESSION OF THE SITE. THE PLACE HAS BECOME CONDUCIVE TO THE PRESENCE OF A RICH AND VARIED FAUNA AND FLORA THAT IT IS NECESSARY TO PRESERVE. THE SITE HAS BEEN CLASSIFIED SINCE 1996.

WILDLIFE

The lakes were formed by the water tables and the presence of many rus nearby. East Lake has a depth of 20 meters for a area of 3.5 hectares, West Lake, smaller, has a depth of 11 meters and an area of 2.8 hectares.

The two lakes contain almost a million cubic meters of fresh water. Wildlife is represented in the lakes by carp, perch, goldfish, catfish and batrachians. On the banks, the turtles, reptiles such as lizards, the snakes and tarantos of Mauritania cohabit with wild boars, rabbits, hares, squirrels, weasels, badgers, weasels, bats…

The site is home to a rich variety of birds, such as kingfishers, coots, cormorants, ducks on the lakes, and partridges, goldfinches, jays, hoopoes fasciata, owls, owls, harriers, robins…

Mediterranean insects, butterflies and dragonflies complete this biodiversity exceptional.

THE FLORA

The old quarries house a wide variety of natural habitats bringing great diversity ecological. The site allows the coexistence on a restricted perimeter of a flora Mediterranean and flora linked to wetlands on the shores of lakes.

Thus cohabit the oak forests green, cork and pubescent with the Laurels, Cades, junipers, olive trees, eucalyptus. Also develops a maquis flowered with tree heather, Rockroses and maritime pine forests. The most representative species of this vegetation that are the Arbutus, Broom, Daphne, Euphorbia, valerian, lentisk pistachio, Lavender and Myrtle, rub shoulders between others the meadows of Serapias, Orchis giants, Acanthus, Centranthus.

Bulrushes, canes, plants herbaceous plants and bindweed, such as Sarsaparilla, cover the wet banks.
