The Gros Horloge (big clock)
Audio guide in English
These clock dials are mounted on a pavilion also in the Renaissance style, which was built between 1527 and 1529, at a time when Rouen was adorned with many buildings in this style, and which spans the street. It replaces the old Massacre gate, destroyed for this purpose.
The first floor is in stone. In the center of the lowered arcade, one can see the arms of the city representing the Paschal lamb which replaces the old Norman leopard, but the red background, the color of Normandy, has been preserved. The underside of the vault, richly sculpted, shows us in particular Christ as the Good Shepherd and was originally polychrome. On the right face of the Gros-Horloge, angels are engraved on the stone, one of which has its head positioned upside down, a sign of the dissatisfaction of the workers during the construction of the clock.
The upper floors of the pavilion are in plaster half-timbering, where one can discern the moldings of pilasters characteristic of the Renaissance style.
The whole was restored in 1892, when the roof was topped with a lead frieze and finials by the ironworker Ferdinand Marrou.
