THE DRAMONT ESPLANADE HAS BECOME THE OFFICIAL SITE FOR THE COMMEMORATION OF THE LANDING OF THE ALLIED TROOPS ON AUGUST 15, 1944.
On September 22, 1944, the Municipal Council of Saint-
Raphaël decides to ask that the Dramont beach
where the Allied troops landed on August 15, 1944, on
proposal of its mayor, Mr. COEYLAS, to be classified as a site
historic and picturesque, so that no construction
cannot be built there and destroy the harmony of the place.
The departmental site commission endorses this
decision on May 30, 1945 and requests the construction of a
commemorative monument, which will never be realized.
A temporary stele was built in 1945 on the esplanade
overlooking the landing beach. This book very
sober, in blue porphyry from the quarries, was cut with pride
by a dozen carriers.
On August 15, 1945, the commemoration of the 1st
anniversary of the Landing of Provence in the presence
the Minister of War, André DIETHELM and General
FROM LATTRE DE TASSIGNY. During the ceremony of
August 15, 1949, the City of Saint-Raphaël receives the Cross of
War with the Silver Star.
In 1964, General DE GAULLE, president of the
Republic, presides over the commemoration of the 20th
anniversary.
An authentic troop transport barge is
installed on the esplanade on the occasion of the 50th anniversary
of the landing.
