The capitals of the Moissac cloister
Audio guide in English
Perhaps it will seem a little strange to devote an article specifically to capitals, but these are so exceptional that they deserve it. Because we have here one of the most beautiful examples of Romanesque sculptures that still exist today, and which is wonderfully well preserved. Each of the 76 capitals was sculpted with remarkable finesse and genuine research into the composition, which was innovative for the time. Whether historiated or decorated with floral motifs, all these works seem to come from the same workshop and may be the same as that of the Miègeville gate of Saint Sernin in Toulouse.
The four corners of the cloister are characterized by pillars on which carved marble slabs have been placed. You can see Saint Peter, Saint Paul, Saint Jacques and Saint Jacques le Majeur, let's not forget that Moissac is on the way to Compostela. In short, you will understand, in Moissac, you will be amazed!
