The portal of the Moissac church
Audio guide in English
The tympanum of the portal represents the glorious return of Christ to earth to ensure the definitive triumph of Good over Evil through the Last Judgment and to establish the Kingdom of God there.
He wears the Roman imperial purple and a Byzantine diadem. He blesses with his right hand, his left hand resting on the Book. The symbols of the four evangelists, the bull for Saint Luke, the angel for Saint Matthew, the eagle for Saint John and the lion for Saint Mark, surround it.
Beneath the large figure, the twenty-four elders sing the glory of God. They carry "the cup overflowing with perfumes which are the prayers of the saints" and come alive to honor divine revelation.
The return of Christ is a very frequent iconographic theme in the 12th century: it is found in Conques, Autun, Vézelay...
