Chapter House and Scriptorium Moissac
Audio guide in English
In the Middle Ages, the abbey had a group of scribes who copied religious and secular texts from other abbeys and thus contributed to the constitution of the monastery library. This was necessary for the liturgical and cultural life of the monks.
In addition, some monks carried out additional operations for the making of a manuscript: manufacture of parchment, ink, colors for the illuminations and finally the binding.
The illuminations of these works can also sometimes be compared to the sculptures of the capitals of the Cloister.
It is these manuscripts that allowed the transmission not only of religious writings but also of historical documents of their time and texts from Greek and Roman antiquity. Certain manuscripts also make it possible to reconstitute medieval music, in particular Gregorian Chant.
In 1678, Colbert, Louis XIV's minister, bought the manuscripts from the Abbey Library. They are now kept at the National Library of France (BNF) in Paris. Some of these manuscripts are from the 11th and 12th centuries.
