The Narthex of Moissac Abbey
Audio guide in English
The decoration of the voluminous capitals of the narthex, masterpieces of composition, uses plant or animal motifs, such as these wolves and she-wolfs whose heads come together, at the corner, to remove a sheep, a bird or a cub in their mouth. These animals with outstretched bodies, arranged in an X on the main face, announce those of the trumeau; these plant and animal images can evoke the Garden of Eden.
