The abbey church of Saint-Pierre
Audio guide in English
The abbey church of Saint-Pierre, now a parish church, bears the marks of more than a thousand years of religious life.
Modified several times, it appears to us essentially in its 15th century state with its ribbed vaults, its choir with canted sides and its painted decoration. However, the lower parts have retained the semicircular bays of the previous Romanesque churches.
You can admire magnificent sculptures including a rare Romanesque Christ in polychrome wood as well as works from the 15th century including two Virgin of Mercy and an imposing Entombment.
The choir is surrounded by a sculpted stone enclosure, from the 16th century, behind which a Carolingian apse has been unearthed. 17th century stalls. In a niche placed under the organ, a Merovingian sarcophagus in white marble from the Pyrenees.
