The Saint-Roch chapel and the brick factory
Audio guide in English
ALONGSIDE THE CHAPEL, ON THIS ESPLANADE, WAS A BRICK MANUFACTURING FACTORY FOR FOURTEEN YEARS.
REMAINS OF THE FOUNDATIONS ARE STILL VISIBLE ON THE GROUND. YOU CAN ALSO SEE, AGAINST THE CHAPEL, A WALL MADE WITH BRICKS FROM THE FACTORY.
THE CHAPEL
The population of the quarry village was essentially
Italian and Catholic. The Chapel was built in 1928, at
the initiative of Mr. LIBAUD, director of the society of
careers, and thanks to the donations of Messrs. Provost and Cornet,
its administrators.
The chapel was consecrated on February 19, 1929 by the bishop, in
presence of the population for whom this place of worship was intended.
In Provençal style, with its bell tower and its sacristy, it is
dedicated to Saint-Roch, patron saint of quarry workers and pavers.
Mason workers from the quarry company
probably participated in the construction of the chapel.
The Altar, the fonts, the baptistery, the communion table
and the columns of the entrance were carved in porphyry
by the most skilful quarrymen of the Dramont.
THE BRICK FACTORY
In 1914, a factory was built on this site.
brick made from non-exploitable residues
careers. Some wall facings nearby
are made of bricks.
The machines ordered in Germany during the
war will be fought after the hostilities. The production
of bricks does not begin until 1920. But the factory will not last
only a few years. Competition from clay bricks
cooked led to the closure of the factory in 1927. It was
demolished in 1928. The frame, the tiles and the stones
building will be recovered for the construction of the chapel
Saint Roch.
