At the level of the current roundabout, stood the Villa Andrea. The residence overlooked a ten-hectare park planted with camellias, oleanders and palm trees. Trained as a pharmacist, its owner is the inventor of “Vin Mariani”. A tonic and fortifying drink obtained from Bordeaux wine and a maceration of coca leaves. Popes, sovereigns, presidents and renowned personalities praise it.
Its international success made the fortune of Angelo Mariani who embarked on sponsorship. Painters, writers and poets receive his support and are received at the Villa Andrea: Edmond Rostand, Jules Verne, the Lumière brothers, Pierre Loti, Paul Verlaine, Georges Courteline, Alphonse Daudet, Jean Aicard, Charles Gounod or even Frédéric Mistral who the wine of the felibres. Also the sculptor Théodore Rivière to whom we owe the fountain.
From “Vin Mariani” to “Coca Cola”
In 1885, John Pemberton, a pharmacist in Atlanta, invented an alcoholic drink inspired by Angelo Mariani's recipe, improved by the addition of kola nuts and damiana, which he called "Le French Wine Coca". But the prohibition then in use in Atlanta forced him to create a non-alcoholic version. Pemberton removes wine and damiana and adds caffeine, sugar syrup and club soda. He joins forces with his accountant, Franck Robinson, who proposes to call the new beverage "Coca Cola". The brand was registered on June 28, 1887.
The Villa Andréa was destroyed in 1980. Of the property, only the Villa Les Violettes remains, where the guests were housed.
