VALESCURE THE ORIGINS
Audio guide in English
The name of the district comes from the Latin vallis obscura which translates to dark valley. It becomes Valobscure in 1753 then Valescure in 1826. Its inhabitants are called Valescurois and its Provençal form is Valescuro. The site is a magnificent forest dominated by umbrella, Aleppo and maritime pines, cork oaks, green and white, cistus, heather, olive trees…
At the dawn of the 1880s, Parisian doctors discovered the therapeutic virtues of the place. They settled there and built large houses. The world of Arts and Letters lets itself be charmed in turn.
Attracted by the pure air of the forest, the English aristocracy rented, acquired or built villas, laid out roads and its golf course, built its church. Valescure takes its identity.
