career day
Audio guide in English
A LONG DAY OF WORK FOR THE CARRIERS, PACED BY THE SOUND OF THE TRUMP, STARTED EARLY IN THE MORNING UNTIL NOON, BEFORE CONTINUING AT 1.30 P.M. UNTIL 5.30 P.M.
The working conditions in this sector are very harsh.
It was not until 1900 that the working day was brought
at 11 a.m. while the introduction of Sunday rest
takes place in 1906. Each worker has a written contract.
It was from 1872 that children under twelve
years can no longer work.
Since the activity was carried out in the open air, the workers were
exposed to both cold and heat. From May,
the bottom of the quarry was covered with blue canvases to
protect workers from high heat. Each wore
a bottle of water and a cloth cap.
Accidents were numerous, in addition to infections
lungs caused by breathing in dust
from stone work. The workers benefited,
since 1884, care and material protection thanks to
insurance taken out by the company. Half pay was
paid for each day of immobilization. However,
few complained. Work was their pride.
