THE EXPLOITATION OF QUARRIES REQUIRED MANY AND VARIOUS TRADES. IN ADDITION TO THE MINERS AND STONE CUTTERS, THE BLACKSMITHS, GROOMS, STOREHOLDERS, MECHANICS,
LOADING EMPLOYEES, CRUSHERS, SPINNERS… IN 1912, THERE WERE 33 DIFFERENT DUTIES.
The first operation is mining, for which blast holes are dug using a steel rod
beveled, then charged with compressed powder allowing the explosion. When the block of rock wouldn't come off
enough, a rock picker intervened to unhook it.
The second operation consisted of roughing out the blocks
the mass, the splitting. Then came the coupage where the
quarry cut the stone into small blocks.
Finally, the work of the tailor, sitting on the ground, legs crossed,
wielding a tweezer in one hand, the stone in the other
shape into a cobblestone.
Each quarryman owned his tools. bush hammers,
foils, hammers, stone chisels were brought back to the
blacksmith for reconditioning by soaking and sharpening.
In 1909, the company acquired a hammer
drill, which will dig 3-4 meters per hour.
